Tom Colwell – Baritone – BMus(hons) Grad RNCM –

Thomas Colwell Baritone CV

Tom started singing as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral Choir School in London performing in many major concert venues as well as tours of France, Spain and Japan. He was also the soloist on many recordings, one of which was recorded in the legendary Abbey Road Studios, and sang the title theme to a Channel 4 drama, ‘The Big Battalions’.

Tom then began lessons with Ann Lampard, the head of voice at the Junior Royal Academy in London. During his time with Ann he had the honour of singing in a charitable event held by HRH Prince Charles in Buckingham Palace as well as performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In 2000 Tom began his studies at The Royal Northern College of Music, in Manchester, with Robert Alderson. Whilst at the RNCM Tom was involved in many major operatic productions including Verdi’s ‘Falstaff’ and Tchaikovsky’s  ‘The Queen of Spades’ and took the lead in the their production of the play ‘The Lady of Camille’

Recently Tom made his debut with Longborough Festival Opera singing the role of Helmsmann and chorus in Wagner’s Tristan Und Isolde as well as covering the role of Marcello in La Boheme with ENO. He also revisited the role of Escamillo with Wedmore Opera as well as another new production of Carmen with Opera UpClose where he sang the role of Dancairo in a seven week run in the Soho Theatre, London.

He sang the role of the Inn Keeper in a new opera by Louis Mander called ‘Oh whistle and I will come to you my lad’ A ghost story opera set in Sussex, which was performed as part of the Tete-a-Tete opera festival. In the Summer he also created the role of Beowulf in another new opera by Louis Mander, Beowulf, Commissioned by Cantata Dramatica and performed by Opera Chilmark.

Last year Tom worked with ENO again, covering the role of Yamadori in their production of Madame Butterfly and also returned to Longborough Festival Opera to perform in their production of Janacek’s Opera, Jenufa.

This year has been busy with performances of La Boheme with Opera Up Close and a concert performance of Faure’s Requiem in the beautiful chapel at Mill Hill school in London. He is looking forward to more concerts and performances of Un Ballo in Maschera by Verdi with West Green House Opera in Hampshire.

Other operatic roles include Junius – The Rape of Lucretia, Smirnov – The Bear, Figaro – The Marriage of Figaro, Don Alfonso – Cosi fan Tutte – Mozart,  Pooh Bah, Don Alambra, The Mikado and Ko Ko – The Mikado, Lord Mountararat – Iolanthe, and Pirate King – Pirates of Penzance.
